Kean has returned to his roots here at Port Hueneme, CA. He lived here three times in the past. The first is not pictured above because although he could find the street, his was too young to remember the exact house. The first two above he lived in at different times and they were right down the street from each other. The third his parents lived in but he was already grown and gone. John and Grete, does this bring back memories?

Well our time is almost up here but wanted to share a little of what we did while here. Most of the time was spent on the golf course which wasn’t pretty enough for photos — both course and game. Except for one day for each of us. Kean shot an 82 today and played really well. Last week I shot an 88 on my one good day. I guess if you play enough rounds you are bound to get lucky at least once.

I would say the highlight of our time at this stop was the visit to the Reagan Library. One of my bucket list items is to visit all the Presidential Libraries. This one was my first and I was really impressed. Here is something that was hanging there that I thought was so appropriate for our current times:

The Library is at the top of a hill with magnificent views. I don’t have anything to compare it to but I like the way it was laid out from the start of President Reagan’s life until his death. You can even walk through Air Force One and Marine One.  Too cool!  Here are some photos:

We also did day trips to Santa Barbara where we walked the art show at the waterfront, had lunch and walked around town.  santabarbara  We went into Ojai and had lunch.  Ojai is not a big town and frankly I was a bit disappointed.  Another trip took us to Santa Monica.  It was a nice drive on Highway 1 down the coast through Malibu.  Was surprised to see some slummy places right on the water in Malibu.  Who knew?  Once in Santa Monica we found the weekly farmers market (thank Renee for the tip!), had lunch outside people watching, and then we walked around the town a bit.  SMfarmersmarket2SMfarmersmarketsantamonica

Port Hueneme was a good a good place to park for a while.  Being on base let us live on the cheap which was a welcome change after the time spent in the desert.  Our lodging was $35 day, we played golf for $25 each with cart, and went to the movies for free.  Military folks could live very reasonably moving from base to base and taking advantage of on-base facilities.

So tomorrow we pull up stakes and move on up the road.  We are continuing our northward trek so stay tuned for the next stop on our adventure.
