Since we have now left Maine behind, I thought I would devote this week’s post to my thoughts on the state.

1. First and foremost, Maine is absolutely beautiful. Flowers everywhere. Even the weeds in the fields and alongside the roads are colorful. Apple trees everywhere too.
2. Maine is rural. This surprised me the most. The only city of any significant size is Portland. The rest of the state is just small towns.
3. The weather is wonderful in the summer. Only had to use the AC a few times. Days in the 70’s – 80’s and nights in the high 50’s. Blue skies and white clouds.
4. Water, water, everywhere. Lakes and more lakes.
5. Maine is mountainous. I have already made that perfectly clear in my previous posts. My old legs are in great shape now.
6. Lots of people on motorcycles. I have never seen so many. I guess it is part weather, part rural roads and the majority don’t wear helmets. Scary!
7. Since it is so rural, most of the services are local. Not a whole lot of chain anything. Not many hotels – just inns and B&B’s.
8. The people are warm and friendly.
9. There are so many campgrounds and RV’s. Never seen so many in my life. We fit right in here.
10. Maine is a great place for outdoor activities. So much to do everywhere we went. And we always had a State Park near where we stayed (and I didn’t plan it that way), there are just so many of them.

So if you have never been to Maine, I highly recommend the trip. The only thing that I would change about the trip is that I would have spent 2 weeks in the Acadia National Forest area.

This past week we have been in Foxborough MA. And no, the Patriots weren’t in town, thank goodness. Kean is a die hard Redskin fan so it could have been ugly. We played some golf (badly, I will say) and took our bikes on the ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard. That was a fun day. We got in a little over 25 miles on the bike that day.

Today we pack up again and continue the journey south. We have quite a few driving days this week and that seems to be the drama days. Last week it was a slide that would not retract. Let’s hope for the best. Enjoy the photos of Maine.
